Weekend at Emmaus Classic Brings "Ups" and "Downs" | January 30th
This past weekend the Crossroads Knights traveled to Dubuque, IA to participate in the Emmaus Bible College Classic. On Friday evening, the Knights squared off against the host school Emmaus Eagles. The women's teams got things going with a hard fought battle between two scrappy teams. By halftime the Lady Eagles had secured a 20 point lead, and expanded the margin in the second half, winning by a final score of 62-22. The Lady Knights were led in scoring by junior guard, Taryn Wohlfiel with 11, followed by freshman Sierra Koskinen who chipped in 9 points. Victoria Nelson pulled down a team high 9 rebounds.
In the men's game, the Knights got off to a comanding lead early, and never looked back, winning 89-56. Behind a great all around game from freshman guard Mario Paul, who finished 1 assist shy of his first career triple-double, the Knights were able to move the ball effectively and capitalize against the Eagle's zone defense. Paul finished with a game high 30 points; Patrick Porras contributed with 24 points, shooting 11-14 from the field.
On Saturday, the Knights faced the Moody Bible Institute Archers (Chicago, IL). The Lady Knights suffered a tough loss, in more than one way. Not only did the Lady Knights end up losing the game, but they also lost their floor general Taryn Wohlfiel to a knee injury midway through the first-half. Carly Kipp led the Lady Knights in scoring with 6 points; Victoria Nelson pulled down a team high 8 rebounds.
The Crossroads men's team also faced Moody on Saturday and fell behind by double-digits early on. The resilient Knights chipped away at the lead, trailing by only 6 points at half-time. Rascheel Charleswell helped to continue the charge and give the Knights the lead in the second half, shooting a blistering 83% (5/6) from beyond the arc! It was however, a desperation 3-point basket by opposition with no time left on the clock, that sent the game into overtime, in which Moody would ultimately prevail 88-77. Charleswell led the Knights with 29 points, Josh Jones and Patrick Porras added 17 and 14 points respectively.
